Summary
The authors expended considerable
effort searching for a natural carbonate that (a) has d-values
within ±0.5 permil of PDB, (b) is isotopically uniform,
and (c) of a large enough grain size to be suitable for a standard.
Marbles are the only natural carbonates that satisfy criteria
(b) and (c) but, unfortunately, there are no marbles with the
desired isotopic composition. NBS-19, a standard already in use
by several workers, provides a ready compromise as its d-values
are within ±2 permil of PDB (1).
