Summary
Art Chodos, California Institute of Technology, has examined several
analyzed minerals for composition and homogeneity, using his routine
microprobe techniques. The results demonstrate the well-known
fact that gross chemical analyses are averages of the compositions
of all the grains in a large sample, and should be extrapolated
to individual grains with some reservation. Few mineral samples
have the same composition throughout, and routine separation of
an absolutely pure and homogeneous mineral sample is seldom achieved.
